Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote.
Daniel 5:5
Have you heard the phrase, “rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic?” It conjures up images of doing busy work while the world is collapsing around us. That’s what was happening on the last night of Belshazzar’s reign as King of Babylon. He had no idea it was his last night as King; he was dining with a few hundred of his closest friends. In the midst of the party, a mysterious hand appeared and left a message on the wall that only the prophet Daniel could decipher.
The message written said “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Peres”.
Mene - God has numbered your days
Tekel – You have been weighed and found wanting
Peres – Your kingdom is divided
This ominous message for Belshazzar could also apply to us. God has numbered all our days. At the end of them how will you be judged? The Bible says our deeds will be measured and those who have accepted Jesus will be granted entrance into Heaven and those who have not will die in their sins. (Rev 21:27) How will your life be measured? When that final judgment arrives, is your name written in the Book of Life?
God judges sin. Scripture tells us that we have all sinned and that the wages of sin is death. The good news is God provided a Savior to redeem us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are all freely justified by grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus (Romans 3:24). Have you accepted redemption in Christ as your Savior?
