“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11
Recently, I had a major change in my career path. Instead of full time employment with a steady paycheck I began consulting. The work is sporadic, less guarantees, and worst of all no steady paycheck. Part of me gets up every morning wanting to worry and try to maintain control and the other part of me wants to sit back and trust God.
There is something so innate in our human nature that thinks we can control the world around us.We teach our children to do what we tell them.We try to control our husbands by stating our expectations of them and nagging when they don’t comply. We even try to control our careers by being the best, smartest, whatever. But at the end of the day, we have worked ourselves into frustration when things don’t turn out like we expected. We have this picture of how our lives should look and when reality doesn’t match that expectation panic sets overtakes us.
Have you ever compared yourself to a potted plant?Where do you find yourself planted?Has reality diverged from your plans and dreams?God’s perfect will for our lives is often different from our picture perfect plans. When HIS plans take us down a different path we can rest assured that His plans are ultimately better for us.
Our response when this happens should be to evaluate our circumstances for ways we may be off track due to sin or self will and then to ask God what his plans are for this circumstance. And then sit back and trust God to supply and surprise us with his provision.
