A Time of Sorrow

Heart Hug From God – Daily Devotional

Bitterly she weeps at night, tears are upon her cheeks. Among all her lovers there is none to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies.

Lamentations 1:2

Have you ever cried yourself to sleep over some betrayal?  When was the last time you wept bitterly? Is your distress overtaking you?  Are you consumed with guilt and fear over something you have done or said?  We’ve all been there.  We all have had a time when the world was caving in and we couldn’t do anything to “fix” it.

The book of Lamentations describes a time in Israel’s history when the people had moved away from God and into idol worship. They had not turned to God with their troubles; neither had they recognized and repented of their sins. In fact, according to God’s word, many Jews had been taken into exile in Babylon as punishment for their sins.

You say, that’s all well and good, but what’s that got to do with me? Look at how that same description could apply to us today.  We are living in a time where many worship everything around them but God.  We worship our families, our possessions, and even our churches. But do we worship the Creator Himself? We turn away from God. We do not seek Him in all of our activities. We put Him last ,if at all.  We say I will read my Bible and spend time with God after I do laundry, eat, go to work, watch tv, clean the house, go to the grocery store…

Could it be that like the Israelites before us, we too are in crisis because we have also turned away from God?  What troubles are mounting against you today?  Would you take a moment to take them to God?  He is the only one who can truly lift you above the waves. He may not remove you from the storm, but He will be with you in the midst of it. God promises comfort in times of trial. Go to Him.
