My “to do” list seems to have a mind of its own. I add more to it every day, knowing that no human could do it all. It seems that my life is dictated by my “to do” list rather than by the opportunities and activities I would prefer to spend my time doing.
In Luke 10 we get a glimpse into the lives of two women close to Jesus when he was on earth. Through Martha and Mary we get a glimpse of a “to do” list gone awry. Jesus comes to visit his friends in Bethany, and Martha is busy cooking dinner, cleaning and getting ready for company. Mary is just sitting at Jesus’ feet soaking it all in. Martha takes all she can and in the words of my grandmother, pitches a “hissy fit”. Jesus calmly rebukes Martha reminding her that she is missing an opportunity to spend time with him – by focusing on her “to do” list.
As you look at your “to do” list each day, do you have trouble separating the important from the urgent? What are you worried and upset about today? What “better” choice are those worries taking you away from? Dont lose sight of the fact that Mary was focused on Jesus while Martha was focused on the details. Like Peter, walking on the water with Jesus, when we take our eyes off the Master and focus on the things around us, we begin to sink.
Where are you sinking in the details of life and not focusing on Jesus? Focus on God and His glory and trust He will help you with the details.
